As part of our consultancy work, Templemore Technologies regularly gets asked to investigate new directions and to produce papers summarising our findings. This section of the site includes some of our more recent papers.
This paper came about after a number of heated debates regarding the merits of checked and unchecked exceptions in Java. Traditionally most people have been using checked exceptions, but there is a gradual shift in the Java commuinity towards using unchecked exceptions instead. This paper examines this trend and makes some recommendations on which way to go and the important things to beware of.

It is gradually becoming accepted that the frameworks and containers of the last few years have failed to live up to their promises. Many have turned out to be overkill and far to heavyweight. They have also been far too invasive into business models, often dictating model structure at the expense of good object-oriented design and pattern use. The is currently much work going on in the Java community in coming up with a new generation of lightweight, non-invasive frameworks and containers that allow us to leverage good object-oriented design principles in out business models. This paper explores some of these trends and makes recommendations as to what to keep an eye on over the coming months and years.

No matter how hard you try it is almost impossible to define a perfect architecture and stick to it throughout an entire development project. Technology changes and new understanding will force change and poor developers or unsuitable timescales may lead to shortcuts being taken. This paper looks at how we can address the major problems that occur in the architecture of enterprise Java applications and what we can do to improve the situation.
